The Hannah Billings Emergency Fund

In memory of Hannah Billings - April 29th, 1996 - January 17th, 2007.  Still  awaiting incorporation. The Funds assets are currently controlled by the Club.        They are disbursed as required with input from Hannahs family.

To date the fund has dispersed $35,000.00 to several needy families to help with their expenses, annual donations to the Cancer Foundation and CHEO Telethons.  Fundraising activities include 50-50 Draws, raffles and donations from individuals, Lions Clubs, other service clubs and Womens Institutes.

                                  "No Child Without Program"

A five year partnership between Canadian Lions and the Canadian Medic-Alert Foundation. The aim is to supply medic alert bracelets or necklaces free of charge to the 300,000 Canadian school children who need one from age 4 to their 14th birthday .  All associated  fees and expenses are also covered.  To date the Club has sponsored the Ottawa Children's Treatment Centre School and in partnership with the Cumberland Lions Club, Heritage Public School in Navan.  The plan calls for cover the remaining area schools serving  rural students.

 "Ottawa Children's Treatment Centre"

When the Club was investigating sponsoring their School we discovered the following facts. The Centre is not part of the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) and doesn't receive any money from the hospital's fundraising. The Centre currently has 4,000 childdren in care, 80% under the age of six.  The Centre has 40,000 children  visits annually and averages 1,200 new referals every year.. Their area of responsibility covers Eastern Ontario (Champlain District, Upper Ottawa Valley & the Eastern Arctic). Working from their main site next to CHEO, they also operate several satellite sites including CHEOs West Wing, Cornwall, Thurston Road Ottawa, Renfrew and Pembroke. In addition they supply in & out of home respite programs.  The Out Of Home Programs operate on weekends at Smyth Road, Thurston Road,

The Centre got its start in 1951 with a house and $5,000.00 donated by the Ottawa Central Lions Club (Now the Ottawa Vanier Lions Club). Stuck between CHEO and Rogers House almost everyone thinks they are part of CHEO, initially including the families of the kids. The aim of the Club is to raise the Centres profile in the communities of Eastern Ontario.

Lion Hal MacPherson is the District A4 Chair for Lions Services For Children and has been giving talks to other Lions Clubs and organizations promoting the OCTC.  Anyone wishing to have a guest speaker can contact him at 613-835-3502 or at halnavan@rogers.com.
